The trip begins with 5 days in
Barcelona.
We can see architecture by Gaudi, visit the Miro Museum, walk the Ramblas, visit a 200 year old market, and
fill up on tapas.
Montserrat Monastery is a popular tour from Barcelona.
A 40 minute train ride from Barcelona takes us to
Girona.
Here we can walk the city walls, tour the water front, see the Jewish quarter, and see several other important landmarks
on
a walking tour that takes just over an hour.
Tarragona,
a World Heritage City, is a 35 minute train ride from Barcelona. We can also do
a walking tour of Tarragona in just over an hour, but Girona seems to have more to see.
It's a 3 hour train ride from Barcelona to
Carcassone
with a transfer in Narbonne. Although much of it was restored in the 19th century, Carcassone
has been occupied for at least 5000 years. First fortified by the Romans, different residents have been adding to the
fortifications ever since.
It's a 4 hour train ride from Barcelona or a 2 hour train ride from Carcassone to
Nimes
where we will spend 5 nights. Here is a
map for a one hour walking tour of Nimes. Here is a
narrative walking tour
that includes many of the same locations.
Arles is just 18 minutes from Nimes by train.
Here we can see a Roman amphitheater and walk in the footsteps of Van Gogh.
From Nimes to
Avignon
is 24 minutes by train.
An excellent day trip from Nimes would be a visit to
Pont du Gard
with stops at the towns of Beaucaire and Tarascon.
Provence Tour Guide offers a private
Pont du Gard/Arles tour which they will modify to a Pont du Gard/Beaucaire/Terascon tour.
Total driving time for this trip should be about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Sitting between the Rhone River and the Canal du Rhone a Sete,
Beaucaire
has been designated as a protected historic town in France.
Terascon
sits across the Rhone river from Beaucaire. Both towns have impressive castles.
Aigues-Mortes is a medieval
walled city in the Camargue just 50 minutes from Nimes by train.
